Small Business Spotlight: Kai Wall-Sawchuck

By Jennie Ponce Gutierrez

Now that the pandemic is settling down, many people are starting their small businesses. At East, we have a student who is starting his small business. Kai Walls-Sawchuck, a Sophomore, is hoping to launch his online business.

Kai was playing around with tools and making bracelets during the summer when his brother gave him the idea of selling them and making a profit off of them. Kai will be selling custom phone cases and resin jewelry.

The theme of his business is inspired by the Japanese kawaii aesthetic. ” I want to make sure everyone will be able to purchase and enjoy the things that I make, no matter who and where they are. I want to make sure everyone can enjoy something cute and fashionable,” said Kai.

Kai contemplated whether he should sell bracelets. After months of thought, Kai presented the idea to his parents. They both agreed with his idea, and his father offered to help with the workshop and set up the website.

As his father himself has a running business, they came to an agreement that Kai’s business would be up and running by spring or fall. Kai is excited and proud of planning his business. It is one of his biggest goals since he was a child.

At this time Kai doesn’t know where his business will go and where it can take him. Although it is nerve-wracking, Kai is very proud of his progress so far. Kai doesn’t have an official launch date yet. With everything going on, it has been pushed ahead for the moment. He plans on shipping items for now and eventually to open a local shop.
