The basketball season at East High School has come to a close, but for the players it was memorable. Basketball season starts in the beginning of November and ends in February for both boys and girls. The basketball teams played Green Bay West High School, Menasha High School, and Xavier High School amongst others.

The rivalry between Green Bay East and West had everyone on the edge of their seats. Silent Night is a basketball game with East v. West where everyone is silent for the first ten points of the game to help raise awareness for the homeless community. The girls basketball team was victorious at Silent Night. The event was a success and helped raise $2,728. Not only does basketball unite the players, but it unites the entire Green Bay community.

Jada Nelson, a freshman at East High School, played in girls JV1 and Varsity. She has played basketball since middle school and this has helped her throughout the season. Jada says, “I have a big love and passion for basketball. It’s really fun and you can learn a lot and learn mental skills and skills in general.” She says, “So, what encouraged me to join was, you know, meeting new people and like hoping to be better and learn from people.”

Phixen Chang, a freshman at East High School, played for boys JV1 and JV2. Due to him also playing at a young age, he says, “What encouraged me to join the basketball team was mostly my friends and I have been playing basketball since I was 4 so of course I will join.” He says, “It was very fun in my experience.”

Although this basketball season had its ups and downs, the players report to have had fun. It’s amazing to see how a sport can bring together a community and bring joy to the fellow players and other students at East High School.

Jada says, “We had our times where we all came together and it was still a good season.”
