Are the 90’s fashion trends coming back?

By Raquel Quevedo Vasquez

Low rise skinny jeans, scrunchies and other fashion trends have made a comeback in a generation that many people did not expect it from. Celebrities have joined in and have participated in what seems to be a 90’s trend. Which caused a massive outburst of 90s trends to make a comeback.

We’ve seen pretty much everything except for the extreme styles such as the extremely thin plucked eyebrows or thick eyeliner. Looking back, it seems that most of the 90’s fashion has never left. This includes, crop tops, bucket hats, scrunchies, overalls, and plenty more. What seems to be that the fashionistas of this generation have combined current trends with the trends that were in the 90’s. Which would be categorizing someone by the way they dress. For example, people who wear heavy dark clothing or/with dark makeup looks would be labeled as “E-Boys” or “E-Girls.” For the 90’s generation, this would be considered as a grunge style who wear platform shoes. Another category would be a “Soft Girl” or “Soft Boy.” This label would be for those who are more on the girly side and wear the “baby doll” dress. In the 90’s generation, these groups of people would be the fashionistas who wear colorful prints, velvet, and denim.

Another twist that fashionistas have made to the current 90’s trends are that they have become more environmentally friendly. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, they estimated 17 million tons of textiles thrown out in 2018. Only 14.7 percent of that was recycled which amounts to 2.5 million tons. Fortunately, companies have become eco-friendly and have developed different ways to keep the 90’s trends alive and with a twist of their own.

A 90’s fashion trend that has remained the same would be the street wear. The baggy clothes, hoodies, beanies, tube tops, and more have been rocked by the black community and other ethnicities. These looks have always been admired from the fashionistas of color. This 90’s fashion trend has become a fashion statement for a lot of people of color that want to stand out from the rest. We also can’t forget about the dark or bold red lipstick that keeps many people stunned ‘till this day. This trend has shown people of color that fashion can be for everyone and not for the runway models. This street wear has been worn from people who are struggling in the project to the ones who have ¨made it¨ and live comfortably in their home.

90’s fashion has impacted many people, whether they loved or hated them; they stayed long enough that the next generation still enjoys them. Some of these trends have become a lifestyle but for others, it was just a trend. Either way, the 90’s have stayed in one way or another regardless of how one may feel about it.
