Due to the pandemic, many fall sport seasons were moved to the early spring, pushing spring sports back a bit.  Basketball, hockey, wrestling, and boys swimming are currently running or available to join, and girls volleyball is set to start Feb. 22.

Stephanie Mathu, Activities Director, discussed some of the precautions and changes that have been made due to Covid:

  • masks are to be worn at all times
  • basketballs, equipment, and chairs are frequently sanitized
  • athletes are required to have their own hand sanitizer and use their own water bottles
  • athletes are required to use separate entrance and exit doors
  • verification forms are made for away events
  • athletes must fill out a daily covid screening questionnaire

Because of the shortened schedule, games are being scheduled closer together in order to keep the same amount of games.

Alexander Aoki, a two-sport senior at East who plays both football and basketball, said, “I’m very grateful that we were able to have a season this year as this might be the last time I get the opportunity to play basketball and football competitively.”

Even though Covid-19 has presented many changes this year, athletes report that they are grateful that many opportunities are still available to them.
