East High School Book Club

Despite the switch to virtual schooling and the postponing of a number of clubs and activities at East High School, the book club is one of the many groups students are still able to participate in.

Although they are not offered the same experience for students in previous years this year they are still given the opportunity to connect with fellow classmates and teachers through the discussion of a story. For the month of November, the members of the book club are reading “I Killed Zoe Spanos” by Kit Frick.

On Dec. 2, the members of the book club were offered the opportunity to meet with Kit Frick, the author of the book they read throughout November, virtually for a Q&A. Students and teachers participating in the book club were given the opportunity to ask the author questions regarding her novel, the writing of the novel or publication of the book.

The book club’s organizer is Mrs. Ollmann and in previous years members would meet in East’s library to discuss and dig deeper into the contents of the book they read together that month.

“The comradery within the group of staff and students was magnetic; we just all gelled well together” said Adalia Altman, a Language Arts teacher at East High School, about when the club met in person.

Ms. Altman also goes on to explain that the discussions have been a little bit different because it’s virtual. It is still just as refreshing to get together with a group of people and discuss the book they have chosen to read, she said.
